Converge - You Fail Me
Jane Doe was my first exposure to Converge and I still have scars from that pummeling album. You Fail Me is the much anticipated follow-up album to Jane Doe and there is no way that it will disappoint fans and hardcore listeners. It starts off unassuming with "First Light", a fairly mellow instrumental and then unleashes its power with "Last Light", complete with Jacob Bannon's signature vocals ripping it up. "Black Cloud" is even more intense questioning Bannon's sanity. Everything is about the same frenetic pace until the title track. Here we hear a more bludgeoning slower Converge. It is awesome to hear these guys stretching out into even more territory. And then Converge get all prog on us with "In Her Shadow". It builds on a simply guitar riff that repeats itself over and over for 6+ minutes until it builds up to a wall of sound. It never hits hardcore status but it is impressive just the same. We get some hardcore acrobatics on "Eagles Become Vultures" with the drums taking front stage. You Fail Me is an impressive slab of hardcore that should heave Converge even higher on their pedestal.
