Elliott Smith lives on in the music of Earlimart. Treble & Tremble moves even closer to likening Earlimart to Smith and that must be Aaron Espinoza's master plan. The music is lush and that might have something to do with Jim Fairchild's (Grandaddy) beautiful production. I would be hard-pressed to find fault with the production work on Treble. Even the songwriting is stellar but the downside to this Earlimart album is how close Aaron sounds to Smith. You could play this to an unsuspecting Smith fan and he would undoubtedly think it was Smith ala X.O. era. So realistically, the direction Espinoza is taking is the quieter more introspective style of songwriting. He does seem to suit it quite nicely. There are great songs and great production, no real hooks or things that make it stand out though. Treble and Tremble is a good album that Elliott Smith fans should check out.
