So, a Queens of the Stone Age album without Nick Oliveri? What to expect? Well, after hearing Lullabies to Paralyze for the first time you will most likely realize that some of the sonics have dissipated. No, Josh Homme hasn't lightened up but with the departure of the bassist he has room to go wherever he pleases and while there are no "lite" songs on Lullabies (save one featuring a crooning Mark Lanegan on "This Lullaby") we do get an even more accessible QOTSA. The first rocker on the album is the trudging "Medication" that has the signature Queens sound that enters your bloodstream and gets things moving nicely. Then we get a Black Sabbath riff opening on "Everybody Knows that You're Insane", a song that begs to be released as a single. It's the switch up on the chorus that really makes it stand out. Back the the trudging sound with the brilliantly titled "Tangled Up In Plaid". "Burn The Witch" doesn't stray far from the last song, save Lanegan backing up vocally. It does have an eerie sound to it that leads us to even more pleasure. "In My Head" it the type of track you want pumping on your car stereo as you head off on your road trip. Then we are onto the lead single, "Little Sister". It has an instant classic feel to it. And we are only half-way into Lullabies. If Homme releases "I Never Came" as a single, this album will rocket up the charts with it's metronomic qualities. It shows off the improvement of Josh's vocals throughout the career of Queens. The album holds up very nicely as a whole, something that the last two didn't quite pull off. As well, Lullabies to Paralyze is an album that honestly gets better with each spin. Don't walk away after one listen. It's an album that creeps up on you. After one listen you may be frustrated thinking there isn't that much variety in the songs.

In the end, Homme and his crew have created the most accessible Queens of the Stone Age album yet. This should save a place for them on the proper metal throne.

Lullabies to paralyze is my fav QOTSA cd yet, i remember watching them on saturday night live and they played "in my head" and "little sister" on the show. i was so entertained by that. i don't know the band members names by heart but i know the red haired guy was doing the cowbell and thrusting the air pretty good. he reminded me of a guy i work with so much by looks and all. i even told him about it and asked him, "hey how'd you get from new york to here so fast?" he was puzzled, so i told him about it and he found it so funny he called me a bad name. one of our odd ways of showing our affection. anyways, back to the subject at hand. i highly recommend this cd to anyone. i have this cd and i burned a copy i use it regularly so nothing happens to the original. i do that with all my cds, burn a copy and save the original. i take care of my cds. so i suggest everyone to take care of this cd. its worth keeping twice :)
