God, who shit in Kristin Hersh's Corn Flakes? She sounds angry and mad. 50 Foot Wave is the outlet for all her rocking aggressions and she has harnessed them quite nicely. She may be aggressive on 50 Foot Wave but she is also a liar. They stated when the self-titled EP came out last year that they would be putting out 3 EPs within the year. Well, they scrapped that idea and put them all out on one album. Golden Ocean is the result and it is a fine punk style album. Hersh and co. turn up the heat even more and provide some loud pummeling like we have never heard from her. The opening track is "Long Painting", one of the rowdiest tracks on the album. 50 Foot Wave don't slow down at all with nary a pause rolling on to track two, the post-punk style of "Bone China". I get a big 90s feel to Golden Ocean, more than any band of the decade. It's like Kristin took a holiday from rock and has revisited it with a vengeance. I must say that the intro riff on "Ginger Park" sounds like Stone Temple Pilots "Vaseline". "Ginger Park" is much heavier though, believe it or not. The musicianship is stellar and the songwriting is solid. There isn't a lot of new sounds coming from 50 Foot Wave, instead they opt for loudness, aggressiveness, and just all around fun. I have a feeling that this will be the live ticket of the year.

I'd have to rate this one higher; I think Hersh and company have created a stellar aggressive sound with Golden Ocean, and with a lot of her contemporaries moving towards more mellow territories (Tanya Donelly, Frank Black, Eric Bachmann, just to name a few), Hersh seems to be bucking the trend by showing us just how one goes about putting out a balls-out thrash record. Her voice is still just as sexily grating ( I don't get it either, it just IS...)as it's always been, but where it conveyed vulnerability in her earlier work, 50 Foot Wave's sound helps it achieve an agression that was only hinted at before.

I cannot say enough good things about this CD; I will, however, tell you a related story: back when I was a record-store peon, I played this on the overhead stereo; one of our more conservative customers sneered at me that it 'sounded like an Iraqi Death Camp'. I choose to see this as a good thing.

Also: kudos to Hersh and 50 Foot Wave for their attempts to cut out the middleman. You can go to her website and download all of 50 Foot Wave's newest music for free, with album art and credits and everything. All they ask is that if you don't like it, you try and pass it on to someone who might enjoy it.(http://www.throwingmusic.com/freemusic/)
