I was taken by surprise at Ani's last album, Evolve. I have listened to her from a distance but Evolve was an album that had reached the next level as far as she was concerned. Knuckle Down is the next album in her never ending saga and this time around Ani has brought in Joe Henry to produce some of the tracks. While the production is almost flawless, I think I have tired of Difranco's vocals. She's a good songwriter but her voice is too much the same on each of her releases. I wish that she would take on more of the sound she comes up with on "Sunday Morning", a bit more laid back than her angry vocals. I would challenge Difranco to do a piano ballad album along the lines of a Tori Amos. Now that would be interesting. Considering Ani has 13 studio albums under her belt now. I have a feeling that Ani may not be happy with the underground fanbase, albeit larger than most. Is Knuckle Down an attempt to gain mainstream success? It is probably her most accessible album to date as well as her least adventurous.

I'll agree with you on all fronts except I can't get enough of her. This album was kind of a return to what I liked most about her sound. She's best when she's belting out clever hooks, something I thought had been missing over the previous few albums. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I was into this release.
