Comeback Kid has a lot to live up to with their sophomore album, Wake The Dead. Their debut, Turn It Around sold something like 15,000 copies in North America and the secured a deal with Victory records for USA distribution (remaining on Smallman in Canada). With Wake The Dead I hear a huge old school hardcore sound, along the lines of a more melodic M.O.D. or Madball. They rip through power riffs like nobodies business. They never quite hit the metal sound, instead opting for a little more of an accessible sound. Another thing that they do really well is the tempo shifts and the cool soft/loud thing on occasion. I found that Wake The Dead really started hitting me on the third or fourth listen meaning that Comeback Kid have a little more technical knowhow than the typical hardcore band. There is a bit of a lack in diversity between songs though. It seems that their isn't much of a delineation from song to song. Not really a big deal seeing that Wake The Dead is only 25 minutes from beginning to end. Hardcore/punk fans will definitely find something in Comeback Kid. Anyone else might do better by checking out the roots of hardcore in Sick Of It All, M.O.D., or the Cro-Mags. But you have to hear the final track "Final Goodbye". It is one of the best tracks on the album with the blistering speed and guitar riffs as well as the singalong parts.
