Amon Tobin was chosen to do the soundtrack for the new video game, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory. So in essence this is an Amon Tobin concept album. This version of his soundtrack music has been reworked slightly so the songs are contained into actual songs rather than just ongoing loops that you might hear in the video game. It seems to have reinvigorated Tobin because this is on par with some of his better work. It is different in the sense that Chaos Theory is a little more ambient than his previous releases. There are some tracks where Tobin doesn't even get into the frenetic drums. For instance, the opening track "Lighthouse" it takes him a good two minutes before we are treated to his drum breaks. One thing that remains is the darkness in Amon's music. Everything has a minor overtone and it really adds mood. Remember that these songs were originally created to be loops for the video game that could be played over and over. This "soundtrack" has put beginnings and ends to the loops. With this, you may loose some of the effect from the video game but who cares. This album doesn't require you to play a mind numbing video game to hear the music. Chaos Theory allows Tobin to stretch out and do some things that he has never done before, and that is the more ambient soundscapes on songs like "Theme From Battery".
