First I really get into Low on their second last full-length Things We Lost In The Fire and now with the release of The Great Destroyer, their new album for new label Sub Pop, they shatter everything that you come to love about the slowcore godfathers. The album opens up with a huge song called "Monkey" ("Tonight you will be mine/Tonight the monkey dies"). The pounding drums that bring you into the song as the guitar and synth join in make the listener realize that this is a new Low. Then we are brought into a power-pop masterpiece called "California" with some beautiful harmonies and huge bridge. Superdrag would be jealous. The production work done by famed producer Dave Fridmann is not a stereotype of his work. Working with Low has made Dave stretch out a bit and work a little more on the lo-fi side of things. It never reaches an early Guided By Voices feel but that band might be a good reference point for The Great Destroyer. One of the many favorite tracks is "Cue The Strings" with Alan and Mimi harmonize over a constant droney loop. The Great Destroyer is an album that is best served up on headphones, even if it is the most rocking release that Low has ever put out. I still like to crank "Monkey" on the stereo.
