By now you will have heard about LCD Soundsystem. They are the underground buzz right now. If not LCD Soundsystem then the production team that calls themselves DFA, headed by James Murphy. I've heard comparisons to that of Rapture but I fail to see that. The only connection would be that DFA was responsible for the Gang Of Four sound of Rapture. LCD Soundsystem does have a little bit of the GOF influence but the overall feel to this eponymous debut is a more electronic feel. The album opens up with the clever "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House". It is this song where Murphy gets closest to a Rapture type sound but again, fairly removed. The next track, "Too Much Love" he starts to show his talent. It's a song that relies heavily on electronics and he manages to get some pretty cool grooves going. Closer to the end of the track you end up hypnotized with the sounds he gets going, never really irritating either. Then on "Tribulations" James moves even further away from the Rapture sound and closer to the Daft Punk side of things. "Never As Tired as When I'm Waking UP" is probably the most organic song on the album. It's mellower and has a bit of a Pink Floyd feel to it. But Murphy saves the best for last. "Great Release" is a build up that takes about 6 minutes to reach its climax. There is nothing cutting edge about the song, it's just the restraint that he shows.
The second disc is a collection of previously released singles all culminated from various sources. It is these singles that made LCD Soundsystem such a big anticipation for many people. I found the singles disc a little disjoint although there are some really great tracks on here.
Calling LCD Soundsystem dance-punk is criminal. This music is dance alright but punk it is not.
