May Shadowy Men On a Shadowy Planet rest in peace but thank god for Atomic 7. Mr. Brian Connelly is keeping the surf guitar instrumental alive with Atomic 7. ...en Hillbilly Caliente is the bands second full-length album and please take note of the "hillbilly" in the title. Brian moves a few of the songs into the Western Swing area but retains his signature guitar flair. There are still some surf inspired tracks on Caliente but he is trying something a little different here, which is to be commended. Have a listen to the frenetic-paced "Stab It & Steer It" for an idea of what the cross between his country and surf guitar can sound like. The set is 16 songs in total giving us just the right amount of Connelly guitar to hold us over until the next Atomic 7 album. The album ends with the very cheeky "What I Liked About Lord Of The Rings", basically 5 seconds of absolute silence.
Atomic 7 is good at what they do. If it's really relevant in today's musical landscape is not my place to say. Enjoy it for what it's worth because en Hillbilly Caliente is a no-brainer listen. Put them on your "have to see live" list. I'm sure it would be a great live show.
