There is something instantly like-able about Lemon Jelly. Their first two albums are still oft played in my house and everyone who hears them comments. '64-'95 is not a compilation. Not even close. No, this is a completely new album based on samples collected from those years. They take one specific sample and flesh it out into a full-blown song by building upon it until it represents a full-on song. Fred Deakin and Nick Franglen think outside the box and manage to keep the result as a listenable affair each and every time. I mean using a sample from none other than William Shatner on the addictive "'64 Aka Go" is simply ingenious. The first track ("'88 aka Come Down On Me") fires you up with the most rocking song that Lemon Jelly have done yet. It utilizes a sample from a Masters of Reality song. "'68 aka Only Time" is a lesson of funkiness featuring a Lou Rawls sample. I think my favorite track, though, is "'95 Aka Make Things Right" that features a, ready for this one, Monica sample. These are just some of the songs that Deakin and Franglen manage to pull off. It makes a decent project like the Avalanches look second rate. In a time where groups like M83 are getting praise, Lemon Jelly's time is now. This is the type of music one needs to chill out (oops, I promised myself I wouldn't use the "chill" word) and relax to. It is yet another brilliant album from this duo. And although the packaging for '64-'95 doesn't quite measure up to the previous two cardboard packages, it is still very impressive.
