I think G7 Welcoming Committee is a strange label for Greg MacPherson to be on. G7 is a fine label but they seem to be a little more punk focused and MacPherson's singer/songwriter style is a little off. Bottom-line is that Night Flares is an album that does deserve to be heard no matter what label it comes out on. Probably taking the title of one of the better songwriters in Canada, Winnipeg's MacPherson gives us more of the same with Night Flares. He gets things going nicely with one of the album's best tracks, "Two Haircuts In One", reminding me once again of the Boss. He does seem to be a little more confident here, though. "Man Overboard" is another one of these upbeat rockers. Greg lost me on a couple songs, one of them being the less than ambitious "Blind Date" that moves slower than a snail. He just doesn't have the charisma or experience to pull of a track at this pace. Rockers are more his style. He manages to pull of songs at a slightly faster pace ("California") but I really enjoy the faster, Ted Leo-esque ones like "The Show Is In The Basement". Night Flares should please MacPherson Band fans and add a few more to the fold along the way.
