Britt Daniel and Jim Eno, who comprise the backbone of Spoon, have yet to disappoint and I don't have a feeling that Gimme Fiction will disappoint many a fan. Gimme Fiction is the third in the Merge chapter of Spoon's volatile life and it proves to be the third impressive slab for the label. The album couldn't open any cooler with the very laid back "The Beast and Dragon, Adored", almost as if there hadn't been a break between but that ends with "Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine". There is a bit of an acoustic guitar thing going on with the song as well as some strings adding depth. I think Britt Daniel took a page out of Beck's disco book on "I Turn My Camera On". He still manages to keep a Spoon feel to it but he sings in Beck's blue-eyed soul falsetto. "Camera" turns out to be one of the many highlights on Gimme Fiction. When Britt moves into the longest song on the album, "My Mathematical Mind", we get quite an interesting piano riff that guides us through. It builds up into a larger sound the further into it we get almost sounding as if it would fall apart. Then we are brought back down with another acoustic guitar riff on "The Delicate Place". "Sister Jack" is a song that is begging to be released as a summer single. There is no mistaking the signature Spoon sound that Daniel and Eno have worked so hard towards. Gimme Fiction will please those people who thought Kill The Moonlight and Girls Can Tell were too similar while not alienating the fans who adored both of the albums. After this album, Spoon will indeed have a place in the indie hall of fame, if they weren't there already. Four highly consistent albums in a row is an impressive feat.
