Welsh pop band Ffa Coffi Pawb is more notable for where their members ended up than for their output. Gruff Rhys and Dafyod Ieuan went on to form Super Furry Animals and Rhodri Puw joined Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. .
SFA and GZM are without a doubt the two greatest contributions Wales made to the music world in the 1990s. But in comparison, Ffa Coffi Pawb feels formative - an early attempt by these future hopefuls to make sense of their love for T Rex, Big Black and Jesus And The Mary Chain. .
Am Byth collects a smattering of tracks from the band's 4 full-lengths and numerous odds and ends from flexi discs, compilations and 12-inches. While several tracks point in the direction of the Furries effervescent pop, overall, they suffer from attempts to emulate the indie fare of the day. Hints of the early Soup Dragons (circa Hang Ten!), The Pastels and the Mighty Lemon Drops are draped all over Ffa Coffi Pawb's buzzing, sunshine pop. "Am Byth" serves as an insightful curio to SFA fans, and little else. If you're new to the Furries, you'd be better off investing in any of the XL/Beggars Group reissues of their Creation back catalog. It's a treasure trove of twisted, classic pop.
