I'm sure the average indie fan probably has never even heard of Brian Borcherdt. Even fans of By Divine Right may not be aware of his involvement in the band (he is the guitarist). The Remains of Brian Borcherdt is Brian's first solo album and let's hope there's more where this came from. It's a fantastically diverse listen easily flowing from the quiet ballads like "1000x" to full-on rockers like "New Mexico". The production comes across a little bit dirty but really works for Borcherdt's music style. It's got a little more roots feel to it than By Divine Right, coming off more as a rock singer/songwriter. There are songs that really do get going such as "Ransom" but the heartfelt tracks are really where the charm lie ("Gabriola"). Brian proves with these songs that his vocals are quite capable of almost any style. The Remains shows many different sides of Brian and shows him off as a muli-instrumentalist. He performs most of the songs only with his brother Adam and friend Andy Magoffin. A few other guests make appearances but there is no denying that this is indeed a Brian Borcherdt solo album, and quite a fine one at that.
