This record ought to be subtitled, Helmet with a soft heart. Sleepsetsail features the bludgeoning power chords of Helmet, but slide easily into sweet passages that, for a first full-length disc, is surprisingly sublime. They seem to know where they're going, though as of yet they aren't getting there with a distinct sound, but that is just part of their being so young. Guitarist Mike DaSilva is only 17! Still, this is one of the reviews where I feel bad saying that they sound X, Y, or Z, since chances are they sound exactly like any band I would name. But there is enough meat in here to suggest that as they mature, they will have staying power. From the chugging "Patterns in Your Dash" and "People Say It Makes Me look Younger" to the truly great "Phases" -a song that hints at goodies to come-this is a record that at first sounds like one of many similar records you can find out there. But find this one, and maybe you'll get an early jump on the bandwagon.
