British Sea Power caught quite a few hearts with their debut The Decline of British Sea Power and I'm sure that they hope to keep that ball rolling with the release of their sophomore album Open Season (Note to self: What a crappy and contrived review opening. Use minimally.). This is the way I start out reviews to make it sound like I know a band even though I have never heard them before. The statement above is true but my heart was never captured. In fact, I never heard Decline. I HAVE heard Open Season and that is why we are here now, isn't it. British Sea Power is indeed British, hailing from Brighton and raining down on North American shores due to their Rough Trade/Sanctuary deal.
The album opens up with the dramatic "It Ended on An Oily Stage", quite an ambitious song that these Brits pull of quite effortlessly. "Be Gone" is a song that is a little more laid back but still is very heavily pop influenced. "How Will I Ever Find My Way Home" reminds me a lot of Luna. It's the only track on Open Season that does though. The rest is more akin to the Rheostatics, more particularly Martin Tielli's voice and songs. One that really showcases this similarity is "North Hanging Rock", easily my favorite track on Season. I have heard some comparisons to Joy Division but have a hard time placing that one. Bottom line is that British Sea Power play some very easily accessible songs that would appeal to a wide audience if given the chance.
