Have you ever stopped to wonder if some classic bands never existed where would music be today? The obvious one's are people like Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys or The Beatles. Where would music be today if it wasn't for the originality of these bands and the bands thinking about how to merge genres? Another band that should be in this category is The Zombies. Even more so with the likes of The New Pornographers making waves. The harmonies that this British Invasion group managed to pull off were very original and so far ahead of their time that it is probably now where they belong. While relatively unknown to today's indie scenesters hits like "Tell Her No" and "She's Not There". Now these tracks are classics in their own rights but as many people of the era (1960's) will contest, they never achieved the success that they should have. That is most likely because the group only managed to release two proper full-length albums. How could a band this good and this far ahead of their time be allowed to just dissolve like that? Well, it's up to us as the next generation of listeners not to let this great band be forgotten. If you are looking for a great career overview then look no further than The Singles A's and B's. It showcases a very under-appreciated band. But if you are really curious, Odessey and Oracle was just recently reissued on Rhino with a full treatment.

Odessey and Oracle is brilliant. Normally heavy use of vocal harmony turns me off, but they are so tactful, it really doesn't feel like an abuse. Lots of voices can feel like a way of hiding one voices weekness, The Zombies, however are all powerfull singers and it shows. They even show a lot of vocal creativity in the sort of proto beat-boxing on "Time of the Season". They shine lyricaly too, with "brief candles" very meaningfuly adressing the way we assign meaning to life experiences. "A Rose for Emily" stands out too, it's made all the spookier by never dropping the punchline of faulkners short story. (sort fo just reviewing odessey & oracle here, oh well =P)
