The average lay-person has probably never heard of Laurent Garnier. Hell, I used to think he was a fashion designer. Anyway, this French DJ is partially responsible for putting electronica on the map. With Cloud Making Machine, his latest album, Garnier is shooting for something a little more organic. The problem with Cloud Making Machine is that it never hits that next step to make it exciting. There are some clever tricks that Garnier uses but never more interesting that other bands. For instance the boring "Cloud Making Machine Pt 2" could have easily been left off the album not jeopardizing and quality whatsoever. The first part has a few more redeeming qualities. What ever was Laurent thinking with the raucous "(I Wanna Be) Waiting For My Plan"? It's a monotonous electro-rock song. Overall, Cloud Making Machine is very disappointing. It is very far removed from any of his earlier dance music.
