The follow up to the band's 2003 debut, The Black Lips!, We..wallows in the same glorious mud of reverb and gothic tales (gothic as in "mutant kid chained to the wall in the basement", not the "I dress in black and pretend I'm undead" Paxil-driven pant-load.) Truly creepy cuts like "Time of the Scab" and "Stranger" prove that their debut record was no joke, and that singer Cory Alexander and company are truly taking us on an ILL ride into their world. Ghetto Cross" and "Juvenille" extend their sonic growth. Though garage is a limited and retro genre that is usually more one of tribute than originality, The black Lips seem to be using and expending its possibilities to their own sinister (and inspired) ends. They don't see the world as a very happy place, a place where madness and perversion are waiting in the next handshake. What makes the title of the record then, both ironic and thought provoking, is the fact that they can even notice the flowers growing. Shit also brings flowers; are they hinting that there is some light they're after? Watch Black Lips, even when it is asking a lot to watch.
