What I like about this album is that though the Shout Out Louds have a particular sound, certain songs on Howl Howl Gaff Gaff sound completely out of character. Struggling with identity and trying something different is possibly one of the most attractive and worthwhile things a band can do. What I don't like about this album however, is that all of the sounds on this album sound very much like other bands. Listening to a mixed CD with Modest Mouse, The Cure, Built to Spill, The Anniversary, Love as Laughter and Cursive will do just the same.
Even so, Howl Howl Gaff Gaff holds some pretty decent songs. In "The Comeback," long notes act as arms reaching out from the music's basic composition and just awake melodies. Calmly and nicely, a whiny voice cracks melodically, badgering the listener in a sort of endearing way.
I just wish the Shout Out Louds could have achieved a fresh sound with all this experimentation. That they haven't is agonizingly disappointing.
