North Carolina native's The Nein have unleashed their Wrath of Circuits upon an unsuspecting audience (except for those of us that had a chance to hear their self-title intro EP). Wrath of Circuits is one of those albums that many people will turn to in the coming years as a point of reference. The music isn't immediate on the album, instead, after careful listening and time spent with the CD people will start to gain an appreciation for this group's quirkiness. While they do sound vaguely familiar, The Nein do have a sound that is quite unique. You might mistake them for one of those dance-punk types but that is only a deception. Circuits is a much more complicated listen than anything Radio 4 have done. There is a angular pop element to The Nein's music but the band also gets into sound experimentation on a few of the tracks, namely the title track. The album opens with the fairly unobtrusive "Lost Sounds" that builds up into quite a rhythmic force. Finn Cohen has a great vocal style that sounds familiar as well but leads us to believe that he has a style all of his own. Wrath of Circuits is a fantastic debut for this band of experienced players. Seek it out.
