Drawing from hard country, a little alt-country and some dabbling in pop, Pardekooper manages to sound current and old at once. Haymaker Heart, his fourth release, showcases a growing confidence in his ability to write a great song. There are musical risks here, from the grungy "Too Late", the fairly crooning "Goo," the noisy pop of "Wild Love." Poignant and barbed country is still in full effect, with the weepy "Just Shoot Me", and "Draw the line."
Lyrically, Pardekooper digs in hard on "Not in Iowa" and "Folk This", the former being a tale of lost innocence and the latter a hilarious, name-dropping snipe at Alt-Country, No Depression-style posers. Haymaker Heart goes good with beer, anger or sadness, and looks fine next to some other records you keep close by, just in case...
