The Golden Republic is a new band from Kansas that seem to be having an identity crisis. It seems to have some glam influences while also keeping one foot in the radio rock of the 90s ala Collective Soul. While Golden Republic is not a bad album it just doesn't provide any surprises. It seems like it's polished radio friendly fare that is cookie cutter. Tracks like "Rows of People" just seem fairly generic and "NYC" is just downright boring. "Not My Kind" tries the glam sound but seems to fail again. It just seems to be lacking substance. And the T.Rex sound gets lost on "Full Of Yourself". It just seems to go nowhere. There's even a nod towards Soul Coughing on "Robots", a jerky track that Doughty and company might have tried. This tracks flops on the chorus and bridge though.
The Golden Republic is a good band, with good musicians and somewhat decent songwriting but they need to look for something to set them apart a little more. The production on this album is great. They have done a good job in the studio and beyond but I do think that they need to rethink their sound. I will keep an eye on what the future holds for this Kansas rock band. It should be interesting to see where they go from here.
