I guarantee that every review you read of this band will mention either a) they sound exactly like the Velvet Underground, and b) that fact makes them a shameless ripoff or a band that exposes its influences explicitly. I don't think their problem is their influences so much as the effort they put in to extend those cues.
Singer Philip Neimeyer's world-weary, bored vocal delivery would be better served by lyrics that come from actually experience, not from those that sound like the writing of a guy with a great record collection. "B.O.B.F.O.S.S.E", "Viva Max" typify the all too often repeated progressions of these songs; Slow, numbing build-up to a Sonic Youth-like shredding. The extended "Grandma Airplane" and the surprisingly inspired closer "All Night Long Forever" hint at potential. On those tunes the band does take the cues from its heroes and takes a stab at the sublime. And reaches it a few times. This makes the rest of the record frustrating. And lazy.
They can do better than this, and judging by their influences, the know there is something higher to aim for. Their next move ought to be interesting.
