Monoshock - Runnin' Ape-Like From The Backward Superman
Gloriously sleazy and grinding psych-rock compilation from these masters whose influence will only become greater with time. As guitarist and vocalist, Grady Runyon is responsible for this mighty mess. His sloppy vocals, gorilla-guitar riffing and fuck-all lyrics put him high up in the stumbling rock pantheon. Monoshock only released a few 7"s during their six years together, and it would have been interesting to see what they would have done with more support and a chance to keep going. But we all know that bands this don't last; they flame out, and let the lesser ones after make all the money. "Soledad" alone is a classic that ought to qualify them for some gold star. From the Stooge-y "Halloween Party" to the cover of Radio Birdman's "Burn My Eyes", this is a sludge-feast, a celebration if everything dangerous and deafening in rock. They are the best band you never heard of but miss already.
