Dirty, unrepentant grinding honky-tonk here; Biram must have learned his country like legend has it about Hasil Adkins: he heard static engulfed radio stations blaring early rock from stations far away, and he distorted the evil rumble of the songs that he believed 100%. For Adkins, Jerry Lee and Elvis weren't just signing for hits; they were lunatics whose ranting told him it was ok for him to kill too. Scott H. Biram must have heard his Hank and Lefty and George through a blowhole in Hell. "Blood Sweat and Murder," "Whiskey," "Wreck My Car" indeed! He sings these songs as if they are not only true, but as if there are worse experiences to crow about.
"I see the Light/what's His Name" and "CB Transmissions" hint at the glory to come. Like a baseball card of a rookie you just KNOW is going to Cooperstown someday, buy two copies of this debut: one to play the shit out of, and one to keep in the wrapper for some dorky record convention down the road. It is that good.
