This is one collection of a band's loose ends that sounds like most bands' greatest hits. In fact, some of the songs here stand up to, and topple over, some of Yo La Tengo's official releases. This is a band who, if you like them, you love them and everything they do is fine with you. A 3CD set, however, in which only one CD features the out-takes and rarities, will probably not strike loyal fans as sexy. This is of course, a perfect introduction to the band, a band that for me has never made a bad record. But asking completists and fanatics to shell out a 3CD price for one disc's worth of booty is asking a lot. Previously unreleased "Pencil Test" and "Almost True" help soften the blow with their majestic arrivals, but here's hoping that the rarities disc is released separately for the diehards. For the novice, this is as good a sampling as you'll find by a band from New Jersey that helps one forget New Jersey.
