Mike Plume is an artist from Edmonton who has been making albums now for a few years. Rock & Roll Recordings is his latest affair and my first exposure to the artist. Within the music community I have heard mixed things about Plume, ranging from boring rock to clever songwriter. I think that both views affect Rock & Roll Recordings. The boring part not so much but there are a few tracks that just seem to go nowhere. You'll notice that I have compared him to Bruce Springsteen but while not even close to the same calibre, Mike has the same sort of sound. The "Rock and Roll" title may be a little deceiving because this is more a roots album with rock leanings. The album opens with probably the best track on the album "Birmingham 3AM", a very catchy track along the lines of the Cash Brothers. The 9 songs following have a lot more similar fare. The next track ("One Of Those Days") is a little more upbeat putting a little more of the Springsteen style rock into it. He gets all mellow on us when you reach "Lock It Up". It's quite a pleasant ballad but it seems to be lacking something. Right back into the "rock" though with "Ride". One of my favorite Mike Plume tracks is the subdued "Dancing On The Wind". It is a heartfelt ballad that really works and sounds like an original. Mike Plume is a good musician and a good songwriter and he has a handful of great musicians helping out on this album.
