This is nerdy math rock for those pining away for the days when Danny Elfman wrote rock music, not soundtracks. They must be out there: the members of the Aquabats certainly found in each other musicians dedicated to reminding folks of the glory days of dorky early 1980's LA herky-quirkiness.
The Aquabats started out as a 14 piece ska band, but seem to have lost the lessons learned in that hardcore, rhythm-heavy genre. Here, all the songs run together at a geeky, jagged and retro-in the worst way pace; this sounds like outtakes from a Square Pegs soundtrack. What impresses is not nostalgia, or a fresh take on an old genre, but fairly obvious takes on a genre that, aside from Devo, didn't have much meat to it anyway. They dress in costumes and masks to boot. For fans of Science Teacher humor only.
