What can you say? A set featuring rehearsals, a couple of complete shows, alternate takes, and some reunion material that not only is not embarrassing, but rocks and even has Lemmy of Motorhead guesting on vocals?! All you can say is NOTHING. Buy it and crank it. There are minor beefs here and there, some muddy production, some tiresome instrumentals included when there is other more worthy live stuff out there. But even these missteps are fine with me; hell, you don't think Back in the USA is perfect, do you?
What will impress newcomers (newcomers willing to pay over $70) and will enrapture fans is the chance to reflect again on just how much power this band had. With the exception of maybe the late 60's Who, Iggy, and some hardcore band on really pissed off night, no one has had more ferocious, deliberate energy on stage than the MC5. Their radical political intentions may sound dated today, but their 100% belief in the power of music to change everything right down to the bedrock is still revelatory, and inspiring.
