This is another in the great series documenting the massive influence of Studio One not only on Jamaican music, but on world music. The Rock showcased here is Rock-Steady. Names familiar to fans include the Skatelites, Prince Jazzbo, Ernest Ranglin, and Horace Andy. The real meat comes from the lesser-known acts, which add some horns other touches to the deep rhythm. Jackie Mittoo's Hammond Organ driven "Hot Milk" is an example of the sound expanding itself in mid-flight. Cedric Brooks' "Ethiopia" and Sound Dimension's "Real Rock" are also highlights. You can't go wrong with pretty much anything that comes out of Jamaica, and certainly anything from Studio One. Other discs in the series spotlight Dancehall, Ska and other genres.I think starting here is a good place, since the grooves here influenced pretty much everything that has come after, but jump at any discs you can find.
