Very few people have ever heard of the 101'ers, the band Joe Strummer fronted before he joined the Clash. The 101ers never really released a full-length while they were together. Strummer got some money together once the Clash was successful and released a version of Elgin Avenue Breakdown. Astralwerk's has taken over the long out of print album and given it a proper release complete with 8 extra live tracks that were documented. If you are not a hardcore Strummer fan than you really won't appreciate this musical document. It's an album that shows Strummer's roots and how those translated to The Clash and his solo music. Their one semi-big hit was "Keys To Your Heart", a really great great guitar pub-rock song that hints of better things to come. There are two versions of the song for your listening pleasure. The album closes with a rowdy live version of Van Morrison's "Gloria". It is a fitting way to end this archival album. The 101ers is far from essential. It's more a document on an important musician's past, one that with the help of Joe's widow should live on forever now.
