I'm not a huge mainstream metal fan but one band that really does it for me is System Of A Down. These guys have it going on. They provide me with something to put into the void that Faith No More left in my hole when they disbanded. Mezmerize is their proper follow-up to the ground-breaking Toxicity and the first of two albums by System of a Down due this year. The album starts out with a modestly quiet intro called "Soldier Side" before breaking into complete mayhem with "B.Y.O.B.". Now, I would guess that the breakdown here "Everybody's going to the party have a real good time..." is a direct slam on the carbon copy pop that is poisoning the youth of today. This is a fun and clever song, although not a super good indication of what's to come. "Revenga" is a little better with its little more operatic vocals. Things really get moving with the rambunctious "Cigaro" ("My cock is much bigger than yours, my cock can walk right through the door"). This is definitely one of the highlights on the album. Another great track is "Violent Pornography" with a great politic statement. Mezmerize shows System of a Down expanding quite nicely on Toxicity, an almost perfect metal album. My biggest complaint of Mezmerize is that it's only 36 minutes long. Good thing that Hypnotize comes out later this year.

Mezmerize, the 1st of 2 albums recorded at the same time and released some 9 months apart, is the better of the two and stands okay on it's own. If you took half of these songs, and half of the songs from Hypnotize, you'd have an album I'd be happy to give a 7 or maybe an 8. But to throw so much filler, so much worthless trite in our directions...they must think their fans to be idiots. And, not surprisingly, most of the ones I know are. One popular thing about SOAD has always been their bizarre lyrical stylings, but the fine line between bizaree and bullshit, they crossed and lost sight of in their mirrors. "Cigaro" is ridiculous, as a song and as a lyrical expression. "B.Y.O.B." is the band's most radio-friendly song, surpassing even the overplayed (yet underappreciated) "Chop Suey". "Violent Pornography" is stupid, stupid stupid. "Revenga" features a dominant riff towards the end that has to list amongst Daron's best. Most of the album is hit, miss, miss, miss, hit and miss again. Sometimes all within one song. These guys are just too shaky anymore. I hope their hiatus finds them with more direction and focus on future projects.
