Emiliani Torrini is not a new artist to the world. Fisherman's Woman is her sophomore album, her first, Love In The Time of Science, was produced by Roland Orzabal who also helped with some of the songwriting. So much confidence was put into this album that it was released on Virgin. This time around she utilized the talents of Dan Carey to help out and Fisherman's Woman is the result. You might have heard her providing vocals on a Thievery Corporation album or even Lord of the Rings. This is the first album that I have heard by Torrini but rest assured I will be checking out Time of Science soon. She is of Italian and Icelandic decent and you can't help but hear the similarity in voices to that of Bjork. Torrini's voice and arrangements are much more fragile than Bjork's. The songs are simple but evoke so much beaty. Emiliani's voice also reminds me a lot of Edie Brickell but that's about where the comparisons end. These songs just seem a whole lot more mature and clever than Edie's songwriting. Maybe closer to that of Marissa Nadler if she penned pop instead of folk. Enough comparisons, Emiliani Torrini is the real deal and any fan of female singers needs to check her out. Fisherman's Woman is an amazing album that takes you away for the brief time it is playing.
