What do you get when three of America's hottest MCs join forces? The Perceptionists. Banding together are a crew of Def Jux and Coup D'Etat hip hop artists including Mr. Lif, Akrobatik and DJ Fakts One and together they present their collective debut album, Black Dialogue. It was only a matter of time before these Boston-based three would do a project together and after listening you just can't help but wonder why it didn't happen earlier. I'm not saying this is a groundbreaking album but The Perceptionists do have some chemistry that is lacking on a lot of recent hip hop albums. Mr. Lif and Akrobatik play off of each other very nicely. Some of the tracks have a big old school flavor like "People For Prez" or the old school with new generation samples "Blo". The guys talk about having good times and they have no problem integrating hard core politics into their rhymes ("Memorial Day"). The beats that Fakts throws down are worthy of recognition. They keep your attention without demanding it all, leaving room for the lyrics to get through. There are a few guests on the album but the team makes sure that they are the main focus. The lyrics are key on Black Dialogue and Lif and Akrobatik should gain some much deserved recognition for this album.
