Four Tet - Everything Ecstatic
I'm sure an artist who had a side project take off and become much bigger than his full-time project had ever been is led to wonder why he wasn't doing the side project all along. That's most likely the case with Kieran Hebden and Four Tet, his break from full-time band Fridge. With Everything Ecstatic, his fourth full-length album as Four Tet and third for Domino, Kieran starts off with the block rockin' beats on "Joy", not unlike you might hear from the Chemicals. That's about where the similarity ends because he mellows out with "Smile Around The Face", one that leads us down the experimental path where we find him for the rest of the album. Hebden still manages to incorporate electronics with organic instruments and make it meld quite nicely. Take the amazing "Sun Drums and Soil", the albums best track by far. It ebbs and flows so nicely sounding like a jam session as much as a bedroom recording. "And Then Patterns" is quite a nice, more laid back track.
Ultimately, I found Everything Ecstatic to be not completely Ecstatic and that it seemed to lack some focus and diversity that his previous Domino releases possessed. Maybe a little too much filler like "Clouding" and "Fuji Check", just gimme the goods.
