I listened to and reviewed Luke Temple's debut EP, simply titled EP and was very impressed. Mill Pond contacted me to see if I was interested in reviewing his debut full-length as well so here it is. Now I found that Temple's debut took a few listens to really get into but it is more because of the simplicity and gentle way that Luke delivers the songs rather than a complexity. He is one of those singer/songwriters who is just happy to be able to record his songs and get them out to people. I don't think he is looking for world or chart domination. With that, Hold A Match For A Gasoline World is a calm and gentle album that is a welcome relief. "Make Right With You" was the best track on his EP and it is included here as well. "Mr. Disgrace" is one of the loveliest tracks on the album sounding like it could be a lost Beatles track with the flute and other instrumentation in it. You might argue that he's got an M. Ward feel on tracks like "To All My Good Friends, Goodbye", with it's slight twang. On a couple tracks, "Private Shipwreck" is an example, you do have to listen to at least 3 times before the charm sinks in. I found myself reaching for the repeat button quite often on this track. But really, can we let the bonus track reach extinction? I'm so sick of waiting 5 minutes for the next song to hit. That aside, I think we are going to see some great things from Luke Temple in the future. Hold A Match for a Gasoline World is a fantastic debut album but I do think that he will show us that it was only a start. Keep an eye on him.
