RecommendScary and wise is a potent combo. To know the lessons that can be learned from mistakes and yet repeat them anyway suggests a battle for the soul that, with or without God, may never lead to real change. The Jim Yoshii Pile Up's songs live in that space between the choice to change or to just keep on going with what feels good, no matter the cost. Singer Paul Gozenbach's lyrics often cross the line from confessional to embarrassingly confessional; he can make you feel like a voyeur in a way that Billy Childish and early Mark Eitzel could. "Low rent horror"; "Mind of God"; "Hall Clock"; "Thanksgiving Grey"; the titles alone suggest an obsession not only with the minute of experiences gone wrong, but how those moments hint at the cosmic implications of them. No one is writing like this, or if they are, they are hiding it from loved ones. Absloutely stunning and essential.
