Jesu - Heartache EP
After literally falling head over heels for Jesu's debut self-titled full-length I had to go back and track down their Heartache EP. After listening to the two songs, "Heartache" and "Ruined" you can really hear how the self-titled album came to be. "Heartache" is what I would imagine water waiting to boil would feel like. You know ensuing chaos is going to happen, or at least that's what you think, but when the boil begins it's a gentle bubbling that is just as relaxing as the lead up. This is when you hit about the 6 minute mark. And it's not until you are well into the 8 minute mark where Justin begins his vocals. At this point and beyond the cacophony that started the song seems like a distant dream as the clouds part and you escorted straight to heaven. Then on "Ruined" Justin completes the transition but giving us a piano/guitar instrumental until about the 5 minute mark where chaos comes back to haunt us. The song eventually mellows out again leading us to a nice relaxed exit.
The way that the EP starts out all heavy, moves to a mellower sound, maintains that mellower sound and ends off heavy again is very clever and really makes this a complete listen. You would be advised to go from beginning to end meaning a 40 minute complete listen to get full value and the best insight into this album. Heartache should be considered a great standalone EP alongside with the self-titled debut.
