You may recall the name Ted Stevens from his former band Lullaby For The Working Class. After LFTWC was finished he ended up hooking up with the Cursive camp but then later decided that he wanted to do something a little more personal. That is how Mayday got its beginning back in 2002. They issued the critically acclaimed Old Blood on the Saddle Creek label and are now following up with the cleverly entitled Bushido Karaoke. This is my first exposure to Mayday and I can't help notice a slight Nick Cave resemblance. It's mostly original music except for two interesting covers; the first being INXS' "Old World New World". If you can imagine a banjo on it then you might be able to sense how it turns out. The other cover is Gillian Welch's "I'm Not Afraid To Die", which ends up being quite a rocking tune. Stevens manages to make most of the songs ring with a bit of a country twang, not unlike his former band. It sounds like there might be a little more heart in this music. It is definitely more diverse that Lullaby. Bushido Karaoke is definitely not for everyone but I think the majority of the curious will be entertained.
