Goat - All Of My Friends
Can there be a rule that someone can't sell a song of theirs to a corporation for use in a commercial at least until the artist has given the music a chance to stand on its own as music? Selling right out of the box doesn't bode well for anyone wanting to listen to closely. If Goat really wrote "Great Life"to mean the nirvana found in owning a new Kia, then fine. But if it is true, as he sings in "Star": "Don't have to be the next big thing, you can be just who you are" then you don't need to sell out before the ink on your career even dries. This is smarmy, self-satisfied poetics with tired electronic or acoustic back beats assembled from marketing research on what is cool this week. That this is being hyped and raved about by critics is one more sad sign that rock journalism is sucking the A&R teat with no shame. Tape the new Vonage or Mr. Clean jingle and feel hipper than buying this. Maybe I'm just old; there was a sticker on the CD hyping the commercial openly, so maybe it must be cool.
