Boston MC Edan is one of those underground artists that have all the respect on the street but can't seem to attract a buyer for his CDs. It's really unfortunate because the skill he shows off on Beauty and the Beat is groundbreaking. Edan provides hard hitting beats with some pretty slick and powerful lyrics to float overtop. I think mainstream Beastie Boys' fans would really get into Edan. The lyrics are hard hitting like the Beasties' but the samples and beats are darker and not as obvious. There might be more in common with native Bostonian Mr. Lif. Lif actually makes an appearance on "Making Planets". It is pretty cool that Edan has taken on the MC, DJ, and sampling duties on this album. Not that it would be impossible but that he has managed to pull all this creativity into one masterpiece. Upon first listen some of the tracks may come off monotonous but with as little as 2 repeated listens you can start to experience what Edan had hoped for you, you feel enlightened and the music and lyrics all seem to jive. It is a bit of an invested listen but when it is worth the while then you don't feel so bad. Give Edan a chance and you won't turn back. Is that a little bit of "Strawberry Fields Forever" on "Beauty"?
