Criteria is the new band from former White Octave founding member Stephen Pedersen. You may recall that the White Octave spawned a band called The Nein. That's not Pedersen. Stephen also has Cursive on his resume back before they made a mark on the world. Anyway, Criteria rock pretty hard and When We Break is a massive sophomore album that has everything that power-pop aficionados could ever want in a loud rock band. It is also the first exposure that I have had to the band. The band proves to be a powerhouse creating an enormous sound complete with some thick melodies. I like the angular (read: different time signatures) of many of the songs. That alone takes some pretty crafty playing and writing. I have listened to it 3 times already in an afternoon and I think I shall find myself returning to it many more times in the coming months.
