The Understanding is one of those albums that had people wondering how Norwegian duo Royksopp would follow up the brilliance of Melody A.M.. They had to go big and that's what they did on The Understanding, creating a very diverse and large sophomore album. Fans of the underspoken debut may be a little weary at first with the huge beats on most of the tracks but you can't help but get pulled into the lush arrangements and beautiful production. The house style build up the the duo uses on tracks such as "Alpha Male" really can't be argued. Then they follow this hard hitting track with the Air-esque "Someone Like Me". This is talent in the first degree. One of the many favorites on this album is "49 Degrees", a very catchy and singable house track that reminds me of something Underworld would have done. All of the music on the album is large to say the least. The production is superb making The Understanding a lively album with enough diversity within to warrant many repeated listens. I'm sure this album will rise to the top of my favorite electronic albums this year. The only track I might have left off the album is "Follow My Ruin" and it really isn't that bad. So their trip into club music seems to have payed off.
