As you may remember, I fell hard for Vetiver's self-titled debut album and I really can't look at folk music quite the same. Well Andy Cabic and his crew have now come back with a little 5 song EP that doesn't impress like their debut. It's bad by any means it just doesn't quite follow up the brilliance that they pulled off on the debut. Take "Maureen" for instance. It sounds like it was most likely recorded live off of the side of a stage in a little bar somewhere where people weren't much interested in the band. People are coughing and talking in the back ground and it sounds like 20 people or so applaud when the song is over. That song was probably the biggest disappointment out of the five. The last song, called "Belles" was definitely the prettiest out of the batch. The gentle plucking and steady cello drone (I think) in the back provides much pleasure. The album opener deserves mention too as a great track. It's called "Been So Long" and you can't help but feel the honesty creeping through in every note. The Between EP is a good companion to their self-titled debut but it is definitely no replacement.
