I fell for OK Go when their debut caught me off guard. I didn't think that there were many bands doing power pop as catchy as this let alone being scooped up by major labels. Well, the band survived their first album with a radio single or two to boot and Capitol has indeed backed a follow-up album and it is entitled Oh No. This album seems like a logical step for the Chicago-based band. They headed over to Sweden to record with the man behind Franz Ferdinand's debut, Tore Johansson and it proves to be a great move. Oh No is a slightly more mature effort. It's still catchy as hell and the songs are so well calculated that I would love to hear any of the 13 songs on the radio. They even manage to rock out hard ala Jet on "Do What You Want". Oh No is not as immediate a listen as their self-titled debut was but after the second or third listen you can't help but feel that this band has what former power-pop poster boys, the Figgs and Superdrag had. Tracks like "Here it Goes Again" are just demanding radio play. It's one of the catchiest tracks I have heard this year with some pretty clever writing. Tore has also done a great job bringing the best out of this youthful band. No sophomore slump here, that's for damn sure.
