Kobayashi is a Montreal-based trippy jazz band with a large membership of 7 members. Jazz isn't normally my thing but this album does have a few things going for it. It's the combination of the live jazz elements mixed with the odd samples and vocals that seems to make this release quite palatable for me. Toronto's Rosina Kazi from LAL provides quite a few of the vocals.
One of my favorite tracks is "Conversations" with some weird sample going on in the background. The music on the disc has a bit of a Metalwood feel to it. One thing I found with Strange Lights is that the production could have been warmed up. It seemed a little to "live-like", which to some may be a good thing. This is a decent jazz album that borders on the trip-hop side of things without taking it too far.
