For my beer money, the two most annoying cliches in pop music are when the British band calls itself "brilliant" and the best band in the world before their debut is even released, and the whole idea of the Intelligent New York rocker. In the first case, the Brit band ends up sounding like late period Beatles, and secondly, one of punk's dirty secrets is that Patti Smith is boring and Richard Hell is a legend NOT for his poetry. So here come The Isles, with its fey, lazy arrogance assuming its pseudo-world-weary lyrics and its famous zip code will be enough. Nope. Of the four songs here, the only originality comes from the listener while trying, as with the last and future Kravitz record, to guess where each and every lick and line was stolen from. At least they waited until the final track ("Pills From Mexico") to bust out the Morrissey. Way cool.
