Ben Folds - Songs For Silverman
I actually spent some money on one of Ben Folds EPs and totally enjoyed it. It was the Speed Graphic one and in all honesty it got my interest totally peaked for the new full-length. Unfortunately I guess I let my hopes get too high because I was ultimately disappointed. Rockin' the Suburbs took a bit of getting used to as well but then again everyone had the expectations of his Ben Folds Five band. And in all honestly Songs for Silverman got better with age as well. Most of the songs drift right by on the first few listens but after a few more they start to stick. It's hard in an age of disposable music when an artist makes an album that does require time and attention. Call it a mature effort but tracks like "Jesusland" really showcase a fine songwriter along the lines of Brian Wilson complete with some kicking harmonies. And the piano mastery is impeccable. I came down to the conclusion that Silverman is a good album, you just have to give it time and be in the right mellow mood for it.
